What is Duplicate File Finder

Duplicate Finder is a shareware utility designed to assist users in analyzing duplicate files and increasing the hard disk space by deleting, moving, copying them to the recycle-bin or moving the duplicate files to a folder. Duplicate Finder locates and removes the true duplicate files before they cause havoc to your system.

What is CRC32 and Byte to Byte

Byte to Byte: Same-name files are suspected to be the same but their contents may be different. Duplicate files are those contents identically the same regardless of file name.

File A: 1010101010101
File B: 1010101010101

CRC32: It means that each file that is possibly a duplicate of another, is read from the beginning to the end, and a unique number calculated from its contents. This number is stored and used to compare this file's contents to another file's to determine if they are truly identical. This method calculates a long integer (32 bits) from the file and is generally considered to be very accurate, since the files also have to be of the same size. CRC32 is the standard checksum used in ZIP-archives.

How does Duplicate Finder save hard disk space?

Duplicate files can begin appearing in your system for a number of reasons, and can have a number of unfavorable results aside from wasting your drive space. Various applications may install the same driver files, dll's, ocx's (activeX controls), etc. in numerous different locations on your system, or you may copy or download the same files into different folders on your system without knowing it. Sometimes the only result of this is waste of hard drive space. With Duplicate Finder, you can easily find and remove duplicate files.

Does Duplicate Finder run on Linux systems

No, but even though Duplicate Finder is not yet available on the Linux platform, you can use Samba on the Linux system to give Windows workstations access to the files kept on Linux boxes. Simply map folders as drives on a PC workstation or use UNC path for folder to search.

That way, you can find duplicate files on Linux systems, and delete or move them as you would on a PC. Keep in mind that you need proper access rights in order to scan files (read access) and to delete them (write access). Since Linux file names are case sensitive but on Windows they are not, performance may not be as good, since more files will be checked. Also, always use CRC checksums due to the different case sensitivity.

Aside from the limitations in the trial version, Duplicate Finder performs like a champ. You can prioritize accuracy or speed in your hunt for cluttering clones, comparing files byte by byte or just by their filenames. Folder location and file-size parameters help you focus your search. You also can optimize your scans by searching only for certain types of files, such as MP3s or JPEGs.
